  • GENRE: Fiction and / or Non-Fiction (please do NOT submit work targeted at children).
  • WORD COUNT: 1,000 to 5,000 words.
  • SEMI-FINALIST: ALL semi-finalists will be published in the August issue of LITERNATIONAL.
  • FINALIST: All finalists (fiction winner, non-fiction winner and a runner up in each category) will receive cash prizes as dictated above.
  • DEADLINE: August 15th, 2012

  • ANNOUNCEMENT: Winners will be announced by THANKSGIVING.
  • ELIGIBILITY: Writers with original fiction and / or creative non-fiction who are over the age of eighteen and HAVE NOT published professionally are eligible. Staff members and featured guest artists (such as Jim Crace) are NOT eligible.  (See contest rules for more information.)
  • SUBMISSIONS: You may submit in BOTH categories. You may also make MULTIPLE submissions. However, each contestant is only eligible for ONE prize. (If you win Fiction, you may NOT win Non-Fiction or the runner-up prize in either category.) Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but it is YOUR responsibility to inform us if your work is accepted elsewhere.

Bristol Short Story Prize 2012

The 2012 Bristol Short Story Prize is now open.




Stories can be on any theme or subject and entry can be made online via the website or by post.

Entries must be previously unpublished with a maximum length of 3,000 words.

The entry fee if £7 per story.




1st    £1000           plus £150 Waterstone’s gift voucher

2nd  £700            plus £100 Waterstone’s gift voucher

3rd   £400             plus £50 Waterstone’s gift voucher



17 further prizes of £100 will be presented to the writers whose stories appear on the short list. All 20 shortlisted writers will have their stories published in the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 5. The winning story will also be published in Bristol Review of Books and Venue magazine.


The 20 shortlisted writers will be invited to an award ceremony in Bristol in July 2012 when the winner will be announced and the anthology launched. The awards ceremony will be the final event of the 2012 ShortStoryVille festival.
